As a punk fan I felt the opposite. Lets just listen to their more punk stuff and leave the black metal for the cool kids. Very surprised by how good their stuff before this is.

The Cult IS Alive is a pure black metal record, more than everything after Panzerfaust by Darkthrone. Punk, Thrash and Heavy Metal are influences in this genre. Black MEtal does not mean blas beats and keyboards, this is the pure essence!

I had similar apprehensions. Was surprised by the quality as well. When you really think about it, black metal has a lot in common aesthetically with old school hardcore, so the transition is pretty natural.
