This is my favorite version. The downbeat version is okay. This is just better.

Listening to this as a tenor player myself, I can see why Beneke copped all the limelight. He was only average in jazz conception - but he swung, his tone was warm and expressive, and his ideas were obvious and infectious to the listener. Klink swung equally and was more imaginative, but his ideas were more abstract and his tone was harder.

This is THE version of King Porter Stomp that I grew up loving. Anyone know a CD I can get this version on? All versions I have are played much slower than this.

Always found it odd that Glenn Miller did the most swingingest, stompinest version of this song!

Al Klink played the second tenor solo and showed what an underestimated musician he was.
